Roseville Verblyf

This pretty-sounding place, far from a pink and flowery village in a story book, is actually a suburb in one of South Africa’s busiest cities. Pretoria, the city in question, also happens to be South Africa’s administrative capital as well as the country’s de facto capital. Roseville is situated in the north west of the city, and falls within a larger area bizarrely known as Moot.

While the suburb may not constitute a land of castles and unicorns, that’s not to say that it isn’t pleasant enough in reality. It can best be described as a well-to-do but none-the-less modest neighbourhood, full of old but well-maintained houses set on large plots with pretty gardens. This is especially so in the summer months, between November and March, when the afternoon thunder showers provide extra moisture for the flowers to burst into life and the other green plants to be revitalised.

In this sense, Pretoria is similar to Johannesburg and other parts of the Highveld, experiencing a climate defined by crisp (sometimes icy), sunny winters and warm, sunny summers interrupted every afternoon by a downpour. Where Roseville differs from Johannesburg, and even some parts of Pretoria, is that its northern location means that the Magaliesberg is a constant presence rising up in the background, overlooking the city.

Roseville is well-connected to other parts of the city via the M1 motorway, which meets the N4, which in turn takes one into the centre of Pretoria where you’ll find myriad restaurants, bars and cultural attractions. The Tshwane University of Technology is also accessible from Roseville, via train, thus avoiding the inevitable traffic.
