Smithfield Verblyf
Smithfield is a small town in the Southern Free State, and like many of South Africa’s towns have done in the past, it is going through a transformation. Originally the town’s economy depended on cattle farming, as well as being considered a driving force in the country’s wool-producing industry. More and more though, Smithfield is becoming acknowledged as a tourism destination, thanks to its pretty setting, quiet nature, interesting history and convenient location on a popular tourism route.
The town, which is home to a population of less than 5000 people, is situated 132 kilometres from Bloemfontein, on the N6 freeway to East London, a small, pretty city on the Eastern Cape’s coast line. This route is favoured by travellers trekking coast-wards from the interior to the warm, sunny Eastern Cape coast.
Smithfield was established in 1848 as a site for a Dutch Reformed Church. It is the Free State’s 3rd oldest town and as such has experienced a lot of history in action, not least of all the wars between the Anglo settlers and Basotho people from neighbouring Lesotho. Today there are numerous memorials to the war such as the aptly-titled Basotho War Memorial and the Robertson War Memorial. The town’s Caledon River Museum also focuses on this aspect of the town’s history.
For a different aspect of history, there are numerous rock art sites open for viewing just outside town, and for those who are content to focus on the present, there are numerous paths suitable for hiking, walking and mountain biking respectively. Smithfield also boasts a quiet enough setting for bird-watching to be an exceptionally consuming activity.
