Trompsburg Verblyf

Trompsburg is a tiny town located in the heart of South Africa’s interior. It has a population just less than 6000 and most of those people are involved in the agricultural sector. Being located in South Africa’s ‘bread basket’, the Free State (which produces 70% of the country’s grain), this may not be terribly surprisingly. The town is close to a major city and is situated on a freeway. Its main appeal is as a stop-over on trips between Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Trompsburg is situated 122 kilometres southwest of Bloemfontein, the capital of the Free State province, and 56 kilometres south east of Philippolis. You’ll find it right on the N1, which is why it’s a good overnight stop – no detours necessary!

As a small farming town, where most of the population occupies itself by working on the lands, do not expect a dazzling array of attractions to entice you upon pulling in off the highway. However, as is often the case, there are a few spots here and there that visitors may find interesting.

Around town are a number of places selling arts and crafts – anything from woodwork to needlework – as well as the Great Trek Centenary, an obelisk on the main street commemorating the Great Voortrekker journey of 1838. Twenty-four kilometres outside of town you’ll find the Boomplaas Battlefield site as well as an impressive 11 kilometre long hand-built stone wall. The second largest sheep shearing barn in the country is also located near Trompsburg and the farm Boesmansfontein is home to a collection of scale models of historical firearms.

Beyond these points of interest, Trompsburg is little more than a cluster of dwellings set amidst the flat grasslands of the Free State.
