Springbok Verblyf - 2

The little town of Springbok came into existence in 1852 after Kowie Cloete bought the farm Melkboschkuil. It was on this farmland that Springbokfontein and then later Springbok was established. Nestled in the valley of the Klein Koperberge (literally meaning small copper mountains), Cloete saw it as the ideal spot for starting up a copper mine, given the abundance of the mineral in the surrounding mountains. Today, the town's economy is based on a combination of farming, mining and tourism.

Springbok lies at the confluence of two major transport routes, namely the N14 which connects Upington to Pretoria, and the N7, which joins Cape Town to Namibia. The town is located in the Northern Cape, in the greater Namaqualand region. The spring flowers in this part of South Africa are another major attraction for tourists, who flock to the area to see carpeted displays of wildflowers.

The climate and landscape around Springbok are arid, with hot dry summers and icy winters with only an occasional spatterings of rain. As a result, the earth is equally dry, appearing barren and cracked. However, every year in August, the desert is swathed in colour as millions of bulbs burst into life, carpeting the surrounding farmland. The Goegap Nature Reserve just outside Springbok is a good place to catch a glimpse of the spectacular flowerlands. Furthermore, the reserve is home to a number of antelope species and the unique drought-resistant succulents for which the reserve has become known for.

Within the town, the Springbok Koppie in the centre shows off numerous varieties of Namaqualand's unique flora, including the Quiver tree, an odd leafless tree which the San used in the construction of bows and arrows.

Spending a night or two in Springbok will give you the chance to experience small town living at its best and admire some of South Africa’s unique biodiversity. Within an hour of leaving the town, heading north, you will cross the Gariep (Orange) River into Namibia, where yet more striking scenery awaits you.
