Struisbaai Verblyf

The Overberg is a picturesque region in the Southern Cape of South Africa. It comprises towering mountains, large sweeps of fynbos and myriad villages dotted both inland and along the coast. The fishing village of Struisbaai is one of the Overberg gems.

The little settlement is located approximately 400 kilometres from Cape Town and is just 4 kilometres from the most southern tip of Africa, Cape L’Agulhas. It is a town steeped in history, as the old stone fishermen’s cottages can attest to. In fact, the stone fishermen’s cottages in Hotagterklip (which together with Molshoop constitute the greater Struisbaai town), are a national monument, lovingly restored to their former glory.

In days gone by, Struisbaai was solely a fishing village, and yet these days it is mostly associated with short holiday breaks. Having said that though, the town does possess a small harbour and it is a fun morning activity to wonder down there and check out the latest catch, perhaps buying some fish for an evening fish braai. Even if you don’t get around to doing that, the bright fishing boats bobbing on the bay will remind you of the town’s original identity.

On the themes of history and identity, no-one is quite sure where the name ‘Struisbaai’ originates. There are 3 theories but one dominates. It says that the name is derived from the Dutch word for ‘huge’ and refers to the 24 kilometre beach which stretches from Struisbaai to Arniston, said to be one of the longest natural beaches in the southern hemisphere.

As you can imagine, the beach is a focal point offering much entertainment for Struisbaai visitors. Apart from lazing on the beach, activities in Struisbaai include fishing, horse-riding and for scuba divers there is an interesting dive site just off shore. Taking the short drive (or even walking) to visit the Cape L’Agulhas lighthouse is worth it, and you certainly can’t visit without taking the opportunity to look at where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans ‘meet’.

Struisbaai is more than the activities it offers though, and what it really offers you are beautiful scenery and the opportunity to unwind.
