Bredasdorp Verblyf
Bredasdorp is a quaint town in the Overberg, which has the acclaim of being the first ‘dorp’ (a town with ‘dorp’ in its name) established in South Africa. It lies on the slopes of the Preekstoel hill, in amongst giant proteas and wheat fields. At just 2.5 hours’ drive from Cape Town, it is a popular weekend getaway for city dwellers.
Bredasdorp was named after the first mayor of Cape Town, Michiel van Breda, who is also considered the father of the merino sheep industry in the country, having introduced the animals on to his farm, Zoetendals Vallei. Resultantly, Bredasdorp is now considered the economic hub of the Cape Agulhas region for local farmers and tourists to the area.
Bredasdorp’s other famous resident was well-respected author Audrey Blignault, who was born and raised there.
Bredasdorp’s premier attraction is its Shipwreck Museum, which is the only one of its kind in the whole of South Africa. The museum boasts an extensive collection of artefacts from ships wrecked along the coast and showcases pieces specific to the Overberg. Some of the artefacts they house include cannons, chinaware, coins, buoys and ships bells.
If you are more of a nature lover, the Heuningberg Nature is a must-visit. It offers various hikes, walks and opportunities for bird sightings.
Exercise fanatics should visit Bredasdorp in October, when ‘The Foot of Africa Marathon’ takes place. It is said to be the toughest marathon in South Africa, so try it if you dare!
Bredasdorp is a quaint little town with a rich history, and a lovely place to spend a few relaxing days.
