Thohoyandou Accommodatie
Thohoyandou is a large town in the Vhembe district of Limpopo, South Africa’s northern-most province. It is situated in the far north of South Africa close to the Zimbabwean border, on the main road connecting Louis Trichardt (now better known as Makhado) and South Africa’s most famous attraction, the Kruger National Park.
Thohoyandou was once well known for being the capital of the Bantustan, Venda, during the Apartheid days in South Africa. These days Venda is no longer considered an independent state but the town still has an impressive claim to fame – for being the fastest growing settlement in Limpopo. The current population is over 500 000, making it the second largest town in the old Venda region, after Makhado.
Thohoyandou is an interesting place, surrounded by smaller, more traditional Venda settlements. The name Thohoyandou comes from the Venda king of the same name who ruled the Vhavenda area from the 1690’s to the 1720’s. The name means ‘head of the elephant’ in the Venda language.
The town itself is home to the University of Venda and is also at the heart if the Vhembe agricultural area. This means that when in Thohoyandou, one is surrounded by lush farmlands. It is these farmlands which form the town’s economic backbone and the main produce coming out of the region is banana and other subtropical fruit, tobacco and maize.
Thohoyandou was established in the 1970’s and soon after Venda was declared a Bantustan, when the rose to prominence as the economic hub of the district.
