Umdloti, ‘the Riviera’ of KwaZulu Natal, as it’s sometimes known, lies just 10 kilometres from Umhlanga Rocks and 20 kilometres from the seaside city of Durban. It is a tiny resort town to the north of the city which is home to a permanent population no bigger than 3000. During the holiday season however, such as Christmas or Easter, the population swells as Durbanites and people from further afield are drawn into Umdloti to enjoy a relaxing seaside holiday.
Umdloti, which experiences a subtropical climate, remains warm all year round but is particularly hot and humid in summer (December to February). In winter it cools slightly but the ocean, which is influenced by the warm Mozambique current, remains a pleasant temperature throughout the year.
The town is surrounded by natural, subtropical vegetation to the west and south and north of the town lies the Mdloti River mouth and estuary. To the east are the ocean and the renowned beaches which draw the holiday crowds.
The town itself is divided into an upper and lower level by an ancient set of mature sand dunes. North and South Beaches, the two ‘suburbs’ of the town are distinct in that South Beach is home to the permanent population while property in North Beach is dominated by holiday homes and self-catering rental apartments.
Umdloti has two shopping centres, a number of restaurants and a post office. Needless to say, the beach is the main attraction. Umdloti’s beaches are protected by shark nets and there are life guards on duty too. A small natural rock pool is a great place to swim while surfers, jet-skiers and kite-surfers will all find appropriate sections on the beach too. Fishing and angling are also popular activities in Umdloti, as is whale watching during the months of July to November.
One of the nicest aspects to spending a relaxing break in Umdloti is watching the dolphins cruise by very close to the shore in the early mornings. Their behaviour is of course what gave this section of the KwaZulu Natal coastline its name, the Dolphin Coast.
