Umkomaas Accommodatie
Umkomaas is a small town on the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal. You’ll find the settlement just under 50 kilometres from Durban, the largest city in the province, and a short distance north of Port Shepstone too.
Umkomaas was developed in 1861 around the harbour, which has since fallen into disrepair. The dredging of Durban harbour’s sandbar put Umkomaas and many other smaller harbours out of service. It was originally built though for the exportation of sugar, which is widely grown in the area to this day.
The Umkomaas settlement is named after the Umkomaas or Umkhomazi River, which has its estuary next to the small town. The word umkhomazi means ‘Place of the Cow Whales’ in Zulu and gives an indication of the kind of spectacles it is possible to witness from the shore. In years gone by, the river estuary was a favoured breeding and calving place for humpback whales. Today, this coast is still brimming with dolphins and whales which can be spotted as you stroll on the beach.
There are numerous attractions around Umkomaas, including the Umkomaas Golf Club. The course is renowned in KwaZulu Natal as one of the best in the province. The Empisini Nature Reserve is another spot worth checking out. It is a forested area with a pretty waterfall and a number of nice walks. There are plenty of birds to spot as well as small buck like duiker.
The town’s real claim to fame is as a base for divers who come to visit the Aliwal Shoal, an impressive underwater habitat of brightly-coloured coral and a range of game fish, sharks and other critters. It is located roughly 5 kilometres off shore and is a spot which tops the bucket list of many a passionate diver.
