Scottburgh is a small holiday town 58 kilometres from Durban on KwaZulu Natal’s South Coast. Its protected swimming beach and warm climate make it popular with locals and tourists alike. The wide variety of holiday accommodation in Scottburgh makes for a good base for exploring the South Coast.
Scottburgh is significant in that it was the first town to be laid south of Durban. It developed due to its popularity among British immigrants for its prime soils for growing sugar-cane and its good harbour for transporting that sugar-cane. Sugar-cane is still a major agricultural product in the region. One reason sugar-cane grows so well in Scottburgh is because it shares the subtropical climate common to KwaZulu Natal, with hot humid summers and warm dry winters.
Scottburgh also boasts the warm Indian Ocean, making Scottburgh the perfect beach-holiday destination.
Scottburgh’s beach is particularly popular because of the protected bay, making it safe for swimming. Grassy banks lead down to the sandy beach, also contributing to its popularity. In season, the Scottburgh beach front is especially vibey – packed with young families, teenagers and members of Scottburgh’s retired population. Also at the beach front are a tidal pool and paddling pool, a super tube complex and a miniature railway.
Being positioned on KwaZulu Natal’s South Coast means that Scottburgh offers divers some of the best diving in the world. Aliwal Shoal just off shore is rated one of the ten dive sites in the world and the annual sardine run (which is visible from the shore at Scottburgh) also attracts large numbers of divers who come to witness the phenomenon.
Scottburgh also makes the ‘top rated’ list for surf spots, with loads of international surfers riding the waves in the June-August season.
Those not into surfing and diving will not be left in wont of things to do in Scottburgh either. The Green Point Lighthouse is a national monument and just outside of town the TC Robertson’s Nature Reserve is home to over 200 species of water birds as well as numerous other birds and small mammals. The reserve has a self-guided nature walk and lovely braai and picnic facilities too.
Scottburgh is a great destination for family holidays with activities to keep everyone happy.
