Vanderbijlpark is an industrial city situated in the Vaal Triangle region of Gauteng in South Africa. Owing to the abundance of business opportunities and factories, Vanderbijlpark mainly appeals to business travellers.
The Vaal Triangle consists of Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging and Sasolberg, all close to Johannesburg. This is a highly industrialised area with many factories and steel works operations. Vanderbijlpark is home to the Sasol Oil Refinery and ArcelMittel South Africa (previously the Iron and Steel Corporation of South Africa). Steel is a particularly important part of the city’s identity as it is in fact its reason for existence.
Back in the 1940’s the Iron and Steel Corp needed an extra site for their steel works due to the increased demand brought about by World War 2. As a result, another steelworks was set up along with a model town – now known as Vanderbijlpark.
A significant characteristic of the city, apart from the steelworks, is the Vaal River. The river plays a major role in Gauteng’s water infrastructure and supplies most of the water for Joburg, the Vaal Triangle and parts of the Free State. Vanderbijlpark is situated on the river’s bank, giving residents and visitors easy access to the recreational activities the river provides for.
Water sports like water-skiing, power-boating and jet-skiing are all popular activities on the Vaal River. Fishing is also a popular past time.
Other things to do in Vanderbijlpark include having a round of golf at the Emfuleni Golf Course, winning a few bob at the Emerald Casino Resort and then spending your winnings at the Vaal Mall.

Compared to Johannesburg the traffic (or lack thereof) was an absolute pleasure. The area along the Vaal River is really lovely. We took a cruise on a river barge at sunset which was great. There are beautiful properties along the river with rolling green lawns and nicely landscaped gardens.
