Vredehoek, meaning ‘peace corner’, certainly lives up to its name. This residential suburb, found just outside of Cape Town’s bustling city centre, is a quiet neighbourhood in a leafy, tranquil setting.
While families do reside in Vredehoek, the suburb is more geared toward newlyweds and first-time buyers who work close by. Due to its proximity to the city bowl, young corporates don’t have to drive too far to get back home after a day in the office.
Apart from its ideal location, Vredehoek has gained popularity because of the major revamping of its older, decaying properties. This redevelopment has led to the area becoming highly-sought after. However, despite the streets being lined with trendy, new apartment blocks, historical Victorian houses can still be found throughout the suburb.
Gardens Centre is regularly frequented by Vredehoek locals and is considered the City Bowl’s most popular shopping mall. A major tourist attraction that can be found in the surrounding area is South Africa’s oldest public space, Grand Parade. A visit to Grand Parade is a feast for the senses – you’ll smell the aromas of street-styled food, hear the haggling between tourists and vendors as they negotiate over prices and see the brightly coloured curios found at the craft stalls.
Long Street, considered one of Cape Town’s most renowned streets, is a short drive from Vredehoek. During the day, one can visit the many coffee shops, bistros, antique stores and galleries, while later on, revellers can partake in night-time festivities at the many bars and clubs.
Cyclist looking for a bit of adventure can embark on the Deer Park Mountain Bike Trail. The route is challenging with ever-changing terrain and is more suited to individuals who are physically fit. The duration is 19km’s in duration and will take you approximately 1 and a half hours to complete.
