Wepener Unterkünfte
In a sparsely populated and subsequently pristine part of the eastern Free State lies the tiny little town of Wepener. The settlement lies on the banks of a small stream, Jammersbergspruit, at the foot of the Jammersberg (Sorrow Mountain). The mountain is the main barrier between South Africa and Lesotho and indeed the town is under 10 kilometres from the Van Rooyen’s Gate border post.
The town is set amongst a semi-arid landscape with a towering mountain as a backdrop, and as a result, is really quite awe-inspiring. However, despite its breath-taking setting, it remains largely below the tourism radar. The reason for this may well be that unlike some other small towns in South Africa it is not immediately obvious what there is to do there.
The town is the beating heart of a small mixed-farming community which produces wheat and maize as well as dairy, sheep and cattle – not subjects which capture the imagination of the average traveller. Wepener’s charms therefore lie not only in the very fact that it is quiet and beautiful but also in the surrounding areas.
Just south of the town you’ll find the Caledon Nature Reserve, which is a favoured fishing destination thanks to the barbell, carp and yellow fish which inhabit the river. Canoeing and hiking are also popular activities in the reserve.
For history buffs, there are San rock paintings on a number of farms in the surrounding areas and the Jammersdrift Battle Site will be of interest to anyone wanting to know more about the Anglo Boer war.
Wepener is situated to the south east of Bloemfontein and makes a good stop-over for those en route to Lesotho.
