The small town of Wonderboom is a gateway to several destinations in South Africa, not only is it a stone’s throw from the hub of Pretoria, but it is the main route to the Kruger National Park. While many travellers pass through without giving the town too much attention, those who do will find that there are a lot of places to visits and sights to see.
Situated in the northern suburbs of Pretoria, Wonderboom is mere minutes away from the main attractions of the capital city. This allows you to experience the best of both worlds, where you’re able to relax in the tranquil surrounds of Wonderboom as well as exploring Pretoria’s numerous museums, animal parks or if you’re in the mood for haute cuisine, eating at the many top-quality restaurants.
Unbeknownst to many, Wonderboom has its own airport. It is small in size with a single runway used by lighter aircrafts and Pretoria’s flying club. For corporates who are in a rush to get to various meetings, personalised bookings can be made to accommodate your work schedule.
Many locals would agree that a visit to Wonderboom would be incomplete without visiting the renowned Wonderboom Nature Reserve. The reserve is characterised by a forest of fig trees whose canopies provide welcoming shade to travellers looking to get out of the hot sun. The 200-hectare reserve is also home to an ancient fig tree whose size once provided shade for up to 1000 persons at a time. However, over time, numerous fires and a parasitic infection has resulted in the unfortunate withering of a once majestic tree. If you’re in the area and looking to further explore the natural layout of the land, the Onderstepoort Nature Reserve is worthy of a quick visit. The park has received much publicity in its role of rehabilitating bushveld and provides great bird spotting opportunities too.
While exploring the suburb on foot is a viable option, horse riding is a popular pastime in Wonderboom. Novices to horse riders and professionals will enjoy a relaxing trail ride in the area and surrounds atop well-trained horses.
