Franschhoek Bastille Festival 2016
Franschhoek has been recognised as South Africa’s culinary capital for some years now, with restaurants in the area headed up by the valley's finest chefs. Apart from the exceptional cuisine, the town’s French Huguenot heritage is another thing that can’t be contended with, and every year both locals and visitors flock to the town to celebrate the area's rich heritage and culinary masterpieces.
It culminates in a weekend-long French-themed event where many a gourmet dish is paired with Franschhoek's famed wines. This event, widely known as the Franschhoek Bastille Festival, takes place on the 16 and 17 July 2016 at the Huguenot Monument.
Franschhoek is an idyllic town nestled in a beautiful valley within the Cape Winelands region. The area is dotted with top-class restaurant establishments, excellent wine-producers and a number of small businesses whose products represent a foodie haven.
Over the Bastille weekend, visitors will be given a special taste of the Franschhoek culture and lifestyle. Some of the area's top-notch restaurants will be creating Bastille-inspired menus in preparation for the weekend. The main marquee, also the festival gathering point, will host a number of chefs’ stalls and wine-tastings. The popular Porcupine Ridge Barrel Rolling Competition will take place one more and a dedicated children's area will be set up to entertain the little ones. To top it off, a quirky caricature artist will be there to capture your entire Bastille experience.
A regular event on the Bastille Festival line-up is the Marche de Franschhoek, where the Town Hall is converted into a French-themed market with a host of inspired foods and lifestyle products available for purchasing. Also on the cards is the annual boules competition (the longest running one of its kind), the waiters’ race, and the Franschhoek minstrel parade.
The cherry on top is that everyone is invited to don a beret and parade around in French attire for the weekend. Don't miss out on this much anticipated event!
