The festival began humbly in 2001 with the vision to exchange ideas around art and to promote the works of upcoming and established artists. It has also successfully placed Bloemfontein firmly on the map, as a place of rich cultural heritage and artistic promise. Having originally being named the Volksblad Arts Festival, it was rebranded to Vryfees in 2010.
This year it is taking place from 8 - 14 July 2018 and will incorporate over 50 shows that range from theatre, film, music, dance, book festivals and visual arts.
This is a major attraction, with over 150 000 estimated visitors expected over the duration of the festival.
