Krugersdorp Central Accommodatie
Krugersdorp is one of many towns on Gauteng’s West Rand. Like the East Rand, on the other side of Johannesburg, and many of its respective towns, the settlement of Krugersdorp came about thanks to the discovery of gold on the reef.
The West Rand is especially lucrative for Gauteng’s economy thanks to the wide array of minerals which are extracted from the mines which dot the countryside outside Krugersdorp. Apart from gold, manganese, iron, asbestos and lime is mined there. Krugersdorp was founded in 1887 as a direct response to the discovery of gold.
With the burgeoning mines, a settlement was required that could service the mines and its employees. As a result, the government of what was then known as the Traansvaal bought up some land on the farm Paardekraal, planned a small city for it and named the development after the Traansvaal president of the time, Paul Kruger.
Krugersdorp Central, as the name suggests, refers to the original heart of the town. It is a self-sufficient settlement with its own hospitals, schools and shopping centres, however, its status as an independent municipality was revoked thanks to the expansion and conurbation of Krugersdorp itself with the surrounding West Rand towns.
The town is easily accessible from many parts of Johannesburg including the central business district, Sandton and OR Tambo International Airport.
