The Maropeng Museum is a must-see
destination, located in the east of
Gauteng. It is well-known for being the official visitors’ centre at the Cradle of Humankind. The Cradle of
Humankind is 1 of South Africa’s 8 World
Heritage Sites and is widely recognised for being the very place where all
of humankind originated.
The Cradle
is a large complex consisting of the Sterkfontein
Caves, Maropeng as well as a restaurant,
curio shop and a few other amenities. The complex is situated roughly an hour’s drive outside of Johannesburg and
Pretoria, making it incredibly easy to visit one of the most eye-opening
places on earth.
The Sterkfontein Caves are renowned for
being the oldest and most consistently
excavated paleontological dig in the world. It is most famous for the
incredible unearthing of Mrs Ples, a
2.3 million year old pre-human skull, and Little
Foot, an almost complete hominid skeleton dating back 4.7 million years!
An experience at the Sterkfontein Caves
goes hand in hand with a visit to the Maropeng Museum. While the caves provide
the initial, ‘glitzy’ wow-factor, the museum is where the experience is put into perspective. The fossils are displayed
behind glass cases and everything that you look at in the caves is explained at
the museum. Overall the Maropeng Museum
looks at the development of humans and our ancestors over the past few
millions of years.
The museum displays cover 2500 square metres – a whole lot of
space for an exciting self-guided and highly interactive tour into the past.
Even those who claim to have no interest in evolution will be sucked into the
incredibly fascinating world of the
past!
