Accommodation near Rustenburg (Kgaswane) Game Reserve - 3
The Kgaswane Mountain Reserve originally formed part of the farm, Rietvallei, which belonged to Paul Kruger, a dominant political figure and president of South Africa in the early 1900s. Since then, it has gradually expanded to become an independent park, covering an area of 4500 hectares.
Originally called Rustenburg Nature Reserve, it is situated at the western end of the Magaliesberg Protected Natural Environment, found midway between Johannesburg and Pretoria. Due to its location, city slickers enjoy weekends away at the reserve exploring, hiking, meandering and cycling.
While the dense vegetation of the park is referred to by the locals as ‘sour bushveld’, this is not an accurate description, as there is a diverse spectrum of flora and fauna which be seen on nature walks through the reserve, including grassland, scrub, mixed woodland and pockets of fynbos.
While boasting numerous species of game, the reserve is famous for breeding sable, a project that has seen the antelope population increase twofold. In terms of predators, lucky game viewers may have the opportunity to spot caracal, black-backed jackal, leopards and Cape vulture which can be found nesting in cliffs.
Kgaswane Mountain Reserve’s numerous hikes make it a popular destination for seasoned walkers. While the 5-kilometre Peglarea route is notorious for its uphill climbs and steep descents, individuals are rewarded with breathtaking views of the park upon completion of the trail. Those who are fit and looking for a challenge can opt for the overnight Rustenburg Hike. The route covers a distance of 20 kilometer’s, and includes basic accommodation in rondavels along the way.
