Akasia Verblyf

The suburb of Akasia is located in Gauteng, in the city of Pretoria. Pretoria is one of the country’s wealthiest cities and also happens to be its administrative capital. The Union Buildings in the heart of the city are a beautiful attraction and city centre is where all the important work happens. However, if you’re in Akasia, you’ll hardly notice all the buzz, given its distant location from the CBD.

Akasia is an attractive suburb in the far north west of Pretoria. It is in fact right on the outskirts of town and beyond it is little more than Gauteng bushveld. The suburb itself is pretty green – well populated by trees and bushes – and the houses are simple but well-maintained. The neighbourhood shares boundaries with the De Onderstepoort Private Nature Reserve and the suburb of Pretoria North.

The region experiences the typical Highveld climate, characterised by hot, dry summers (from November to March, and chilly winter days, regularly interrupted by afternoon thundershowers. If you want to visit Akasia’s closest attraction, it’s probably best to come outside of the rainy season. The attraction in question is the Wonderboom Nature Reserve, a 200 hectare protected area whose main attraction is the wild fig tree, or Wonderboom (wonder tree), which is over 1000 years old. The reserve is also home to a breeding pair of black eagles and there is an interesting interpretation trail too.

Although Akasia is situated so far north, it is not completely isolated from the rest of the city, thanks to a pair of transport routes nearby. The N4 runs east to west while the R80, probably the most pertinent route, runs north to south towards the Pretoria CBD.
