Balgowan Unterkünfte
Balgowan is one of the numerous small towns and farming communities which make up the awe-inspiring KwaZulu Natal Midlands. Pietermaritzburg, about 80 kilometres south of Durban is the gateway to this bucolic area which consists of meandering hills and green farmlands leading up to the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains.
Some of the other towns are Dundee, Hilton, Mooi River and Howick, all varying sizes but can generally be classified as ‘small’. Balgowan is one of the smaller towns, consisting of little more than an old trading store and a train station. The station is used to transport the timber which is produced in the area to larger industrial hubs like Pietermaritzburg. Timber, specifically pine and eucalyptus is one of the major sources of income for this wealthy farming community, as is cattle and dairy farming. The town and its surrounds also does pretty well out of tourism.
The R103 road runs through the little settlement, placing it squarely on the popular Midlands Meander tourist route. This route connects many of the small towns in the Midlands and is well known for its artisanal shops selling anything from cheese to ceramics as well as the cosy guest farms with views out over the hills.
The area is also a major hub for eco-tourism and hiking and mountain bike tracks in particular abound. The Balgowan Conservancy for example has many pathways from which you can observe the amphibians, birds, small mammals and insects which call the indigenous mist-belt forests and grasslands home.
Balgowan is also renowned for Michaelhouse School, an exclusive boys' school boasting English-gothic style buildings and a chapel which is open to the public. The chapel draws visitors for its stained glass rose window by Ervin Bossanyi.
