Ballito Verblyf - 3
Ballito is an area on the coast just north of Durban in KwaZulu Natal. While it was once a separate town, the expansion of both Durban and Ballito itself means that the 40 kilometres between the two places count for less and less and today, Ballito is essentially a suburb of the larger city. Thus if you are looking for a place to stay in Durban that isn’t in the centre of the hustle and bustle, consider staying in Ballito.
It was originally developed on a section of a sugar-cane plantation by a development and investment company. The plan in the 1950’s, when the town was established, was for it to be a holiday resort for wealthy Durban locals. Today though, it is much more than that. It is a suburb with developed infrastructure and a developing business community.
Ballito is on the Dolphin Coast, so-named for the frequently sighted dolphins which cruise this section of ocean. Being so close to Durbs, it boasts the same sub-tropical climate, making it a heavenly place to visit weather-wise. Everything from hotels, to bed & breakfasts and backpackers are in abundance in Ballito, making it the perfect holiday destination.
Summer is hot and humid but the ocean helps to take the edge off and makes a great escape when the heat becomes too much. Winter, on the other hand, is warm and dry while the ocean temperatures are consistently pleasant. Come rain or shine, Ballito makes for the perfect home away from home for the duration of your holiday.
The ocean is an important draw card for Ballito and forms the basis for many activities. Two main beaches, Willards and Boulder, are great for swimming and surfing respectively. The beaches are patrolled by qualified life guards and shark nets are in place. Fishing is also popular from the beach and rocks.
Other things to do in Ballito overlap with Durban attractions. You can:
• Learn to surf
• Go scuba diving off the coast
• Take a whale-watching boat trip
• Visit one of the small nature reserves nearby
Ballito offers something for everyone, and don’t forget that Durban is so close that you can easily pop into the city.

Ballito is the jewel of the Dolphin Coast with everything you need close by, yet not as busy and hectic as Umhlanga or Durban.

Ballito
It is a beautiful area, but it was too busy December. The Granny Pool in Salt Rock was too busy to even have a swim in it. We went to the beach once only at Salt Rock. People braaied in the parking lot and was drinking and made a noise.
