The North Coast refers to a section of beautiful coastline just north of Durban in Kwazulu Natal. If you are based at any of the towns between (and including) Zimbali and Tugela River (sometimes called Thukela River), you are staying at accommodation on the North Coast.
Throughout most of South Africa’s Kwazulu Natal, you can expect a subtropical climate with hot humid summers and clear, dry and warm winters. Along the North Coast you can expect average summer highs of 28°C and winter highs of 23°C. Perhaps best of all though is an annual ocean temperature of roughly 21°C.
Activities on the North Coast (also known as the Dolphin Coast due to the bottlenose dolphins which inhabit those waters) are plentiful with the ocean and beaches taking centre stage. A combination of pristine beaches, warm weather and pleasant sea temperatures makes beach holidays on the North Coast ideal in any season. Apart from sunbathing and sand-castle construction, there are also plenty of rock pools with clear water allowing you to spot the variety of rock-pool creatures and plants that call this habitat home.
A horse-ride along the beach at low tide is a fun way to pass a few hours and anglers will be in seventh heaven. For something a little different, micro-light flights along the coast provide a whole new perspective on this beautiful coastline.
For the culture vultures among you, the North Coast forms part of the old Zulu Kingdom, in fact the famous Zulu warrior Shaka is buried here. There are also numerous battle sites such as the Ultimatum Tree and Fort Pearson where battles between the Zulus and the British occurred.
One thing you will notice about the North Coast of Kwazulu Natal is the large Indian population. Make an effort to pop into a temple or two while you’re there and do not go home without some colourful spices!
If you are interested in accommodation on the North Coast, consider towns such as Ballito, Shaka’s Rock, Salt Rock and Zinkwazi Beach. Many towns along the coast offer the best of both worlds – beautiful scenery complimented by good restaurants and excellent accommodation options.
