Shaka's Rock Verblyf

Shaka’s Rock is comprised of a long, golden-sand beach, a rocky outcrop and a small residential area. It is located on KwaZulu Natal’s North Coast, also often called the Dolphin Coast for the abundance of dolphins and whales which cruise along the shoreline, and is just 40 kilometres outside the province’s capital, Durban. It has some affluent neighbours too, one of which is Ballito.

The main beach at Shaka’s Rock is known as Catfish Beach, and the proximity to Ballito is such that one can walk there from Ballito’s Willard Beach or vice versa. One of the things which defines the North Coast is the length its beaches, and sitting on Catfish Beach in Shaka’s Rock, one certainly gets the sense that you could walk for miles along the coast, keeping a constant eye open for dolphins and whales. Shaka’s Rock is a little different from other North Coast towns though, because where there are usually coastal dunes flanking the town and beach, this area is surrounded instead by a rocky cliffs. Swimming in the tidal pool it is particularly noticeable, as the pool is flanked by the cliffs.

Shaka’s Rock got its name because it is believed that Shaka and his Zulu warriors used the rocky outcrop as a lookout point. While the outcrop does offer great views, most of the action happens down below on the beach, where surfers take advantage of the good waves and deep sea fisherman set off for a day of fishing. The beach’s ski-boat launch is quite an attraction too, as beach-goers are often treated to the surprising antics of ski-boat drivers as they launch dramatically into the surf and beach themselves on the sand at the end of their deep-sea outing.

There is plenty of accommodation, of all varieties at Shaka’s Rock, despite the small size of the settlement.
