Originally named Botany Bay, after a botanical garden landscaped in the area, it underwent a name change after World War 1 and came to its current incarnation as Bantry Bay. Favoured by affluent Cape Town residents for its distinct lack of wind, a significant point given the presence of the howling Cape Doctor in almost all others parts of the city, this small section of Cape Town has much to offer the discerning traveller.
The geographical layout of the suburb means that almost all accommodation in Bantry Bay is set right upon the shoreline, allowing one to enter dreamland aided by the sound of the waves lapping the shore while a gentle sea-breeze cools you in the heat of summer. After waking up from a pleasant nap to the sight of the glistening sea, you might be inspired to stroll southward into the neighbouring suburb of Clifton for a spot of sun-tanning on 1 of the 4 gorgeous Clifton beaches.
In the opposite direction lies Sea Point, a rather livelier suburb. If you’d like to escape your Bantry Bay abode for a convenient meal or pop out for a drink, Sea Point is the place for you.
Perhaps the best thing about Bantry Bay is its proximity to the city centre, without the noise and throng of people that come with it. One can reach the Cape Town City Bowl tourist attractions, restaurants and the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in a taxi or rented vehicle within 7 minutes.
