Barra Verblyf
Barra is an ideal destination for holidaymakers who looking to get away from it all. With its peace-inducing setting, one cannot help but ease into a relaxed state of mind. This small Mozambican resort, situated north of Maputo, is almost entirely surrounded by water; with an estuary to the one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. Guests fall asleep each night, not to the unwelcoming roars of traffic, but the calming sounds of lapping water.
As visitors might expect, Barra’s biggest drawcard are its pristine beaches. The sand is soft and the sea is warm. Those who are planning a trip to the resort are advised to visit between late March and June. The cooler months, Barra’s ‘winter’, is unlike the typical season you’re accustomed to. During the day, don your bikini or a pair of board shorts and bask in the warm sun, while late afternoons, evenings and early mornings require you to wear a long-sleeved cardigan or light jersey.
Guests who are looking to explore Barra’s vast marine life can venture out into the deeper seas on a scuba diving tour. With the surrounding ocean being home to fourteen reefs, divers will encounter hundreds of colourful varieties of fish, and if you’re lucky the slow-moving, ponderous whale shark. If you prefer the shallower waters of the lagoon, don goggles and a snorkel as you may have the chance of spotting a pair of seahorses.
If you’d rather ride the waves rather than explore what’s underneath the surface, Barra has some excellent surfing opportunities. During low tide, the gentle swells are ideal for novice paddlers; while later on in the afternoon seasoned enthusiasts enjoy the plunging breakers as the tide comes in; and more often than not, share the ocean with schools of bottle-nosed dolphins.
Following lazy beach days of drinking cocktails out of coconuts and tanning in the sun, tired tourists can enjoy a good night’s rest at the many seaside hotels – offering comfort in an opulent, beach-styled setting.
Visit the neighbouring town of Inhambane if you’re looking to do some convenience shopping. Here you’ll find shops to peruse as well as cafes and restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat or a cup of coffee.
