Vilanculos Verblyf
Vilanculos is a picturesque Mozambican destination suitable for the pages of just about any magazine selling the idea of paradise. It is a small town in the southern province of Inhambane. It is an extraordinarily popular tourist destination thanks to its proximity to the famous Bazaruto Archipelago and has a great tourist infrastructure as a result.
Vilanculos was originally named after a tribal chief called Gamala Vilankulo Mukoke. During colonial times the spelling was changed to suit the Portuguese tongue better. The name however, has little bearing on the loveliness of the location. The town is only about 5 kilometres long and is completely walkable. It is a sandy location dotted with palm trees and sidling up to the beach you will be confronted by the spectacular turquoise water.
The town has many accommodation options for all budgets and plenty to keep tourists entertained. There is the central market to explore as well as numerous eateries and bars where you can sample traditional seafood delights and mingle with locals and other travellers. Outside of town you will find a number of more exclusive beach lodges.
Bazaruto, which consists of 6 islands, is Mozambique’s only underwater national park. It protects a wide variety of species which live amongst the coral reefs and in the bay. These include giant turtles, dugongs, game fish and a variety of coral fish like parrot, butterfly and angel fish. It goes without saying that this is a scuba diver’s paradise.
Horse-riding, surfing and fishing are all popular activities in the area and you can also go on a trip on a traditional dhow boat.
