Betty's Bay Verblyf
Betty’s Bay is the little town sister to Hermanus, and what it lacks in size it makes up for in character. Situated on the Overberg coast and just one hour’s drive from Cape Town, Betty’s Bay is a perfect weekend getaway for Cape Town locals looking to get out of the city.
Bettys Bay’s claim to fame is that it lies within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve; the first UNESCO declared Biosphere in South Africa and the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom. The reserve stretches along the coast from Gordon’s Bay through Kleinmond and inland from the farms of the Elgin Basin through to Grabouw.
The Harold Porter Botanical Gardens is a key Betty’s Bay attraction.The best time to visit is during the flowering season from October to February where a glorious array of gladioli, watsonias and the rare red disas are on full display. The garden can easily explored with a day trip, following one of the pretty laid-out paths and hillside trails. For the more adventurous, Leopard’s Gorge offers an adventurous hike.
The resident penguin colony at Stony Point is one of only four mainland colonies in South Africa and it was declared a municipal nature reserve in 2002. The best time of day to view the penguins is in the late afternoon, when they return from their daily fishing expeditions.
