Kleinmond Verblyf
The little town of Kleinmond in the Overberg region of the Southern Cape is a holiday town and a relaxing, quiet escape for retirees. It is one of those places which is quiet for most of the year and then comes alive in summer holidays and over long weekends. This is because it offers so much to the weekend crowds.
For starters, the Kleinmond beach is a certified Blue Flag beach, giving an indication of its safety for swimming, cleanliness and environmental management plan. People also practise angling in the waves.
Kleinmond means ‘little mouth’ in Afrikaans and refers to the mouth of the Bot River, which forms the Kleinmond Lagoon. This body of water rivals the beach for visitors’ attention. It forms part of the Kleinmond wetland, where you’ll find South Africa’s only marsh-dwelling wild horses. The lagoon is also a fun place to try your hand at sailing or perhaps hire a canoe, and the bird life is prolific too.
Kleinmond is very special in that it lies within a UNESCO-declared biosphere. This translates into a rich variety of fauna and flora found along the coast and in the mountains surrounding the town. The Koggelberg Reserve down the road from Kleinmond offers great opportunities for hiking, kayaking and mountain biking, while the Harold Porter Botanical Garden in Betty’s Bay is particularly well-known for the Disa flowers found there.
Between late May and early September breeding Southern right whales can be observed in the bay from Kleinmond, and if you really want to get a good whale fix, Hermanus, claiming the best land-based whale watching in the world, is a short drive away.
So, if you’re looking for a short break from Cape Town, Kleinmond might just be the answer you’re looking for.
