Bryanston Verblyf

Bryanston is an affluent neighbourhood in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, the capital city of Gauteng. It was originally declared in 1949, at which time it was a rural settlement outside the Johannesburg. However, as the city developed, it ate up the surrounding outposts, including Bryanston. The neighbourhood now falls into the broader clutch of suburbs under the umbrella of name Sandton.

The suburb is defined by large, well-kept properties – rolling lawns skirted by overflowing flower beds – and big houses, making it a relatively tranquil place to base yourself in Johannesburg. Despite its calm vibe, being located in Sandton means you will never be left wanting for things to do. Apart from the Sandton Mall down the road which is the largest shopping centre in South Africa, and home to some of Joburg’s best restaurants, you can opt for a township tour of Alexandria or take care of business at the Sandton Convention Centre, all within easy access.

Bryanston, which experiences the same dry, hot summers with afternoon thunder showers, and the crisp cool winters as the rest of Joburg, does have slightly higher temperatures than central Johannesburg because it is further north. No matter what the temperature though, the famous Bryanston Organic & Natural Market takes place every Saturday morning.

The Market is a Bryanston institution and is Johannesburg’s original open air market. It sells anything from organic vegetables and prepared meals to eat there to artisanal craft products and vintage clothing – all in a relaxing, scenic setting.

The neighbourhood’s other institution is the Bryanston Country Club, which lies at the heart of the suburb. It was established a year after the suburb itself and offers patrons a stylish form of entertainment either on the golf course or one of the squash or tennis courts or bowling greens.
