Bulawayo Unterkünfte
Bulawayo is a city in the south of Zimbabwe. It is roughly 439 kilometres south west of Harare, the country’s capital city. Bulawayo is the second largest city in Zimbabwe and, like Harare, is an important industrial and economic centre for the country.
The city lies on the Zimbabwe highlands – flat plains at a decent altitude which leads to the humid subtropical climate experienced by the city. Despite the apparent humid nature of Bulawayo’s weather, it receives little actual rain and in fact is prone to draught, owing to its proximity to the Kalahari Desert.
Both Harare and Bulawayo suffered as a result of Zimbabwe’s economic problems and while Bulawayo is a little neglected, it is still a proud city and quite pleasing to the eye. There is not an abundance of things to do there and it is not a place that eats up weeks of your time, but if you have a day or two to spend in the city there is enough to keep you entertained.
The Bulawayo Railway Museum of Zimbabwe has an appropriate home in the city since Bulawayo is the headquarters for the National Railways of Zimbabwe. There is also a National gallery of Bulawayo, sister to the National Gallery in Harare. The botanical gardens are a nice place to spend an afternoon or just to take a stroll. If you enjoy surreal experiences, visit the public swimming pool, which is like stepping back into the 1920’s thanks to the line of coloured changing rooms and other give away details.
Outside town you’ll find the Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage, which is a good destination for kids. The Matobo Hills National Park, an hour outside of Bulawayo is home to Cecile John Rhodes’ gravesite as well as wildlife and some incredible scenery.
Last but not least, visit the Khami Ruins, a Unesco World Heritage site. Khami is the site of the ancient Kingdom of Butua and a fascinating glimpse into the Zimbabwe of the past.
