Calvinia Verblyf

Calvinia is a town located just over 300 kilometres from Cape Town. You can get there by following the R27 road from Cape Town up the West Coast into the Northern Cape. It lies in the Hantam region of the province, at the foot of the majestic Hantam Mountains and along the banks of the Oorlogskloof (War Ravine) River.

Calvinia is a quiet dorpie (small town) in the heart of the Great Karoo – a vast semi-arid land dotted with small shrubs, red rocks and an expanse of sky that will set your imagination wondering for days. As a result of being an a semi-desert, the climate is quite arid, with warm to hot summers sometimes reaching 40°C (December-March) and cool to icy winters (May-July) where the temperature has been known to drop to -8°C, with snow occurring regularly.

The town gets its name from the French religious reformer Jean Calvin. It was inaugurated as Calvinia in 1851 and was announced a municipality in 1904. In some respects, not much has changed in the time between Calvinia’s establishment and today. The landscape certainly hasn’t changed much and is as starkly beautiful today as it ever was. The economy’s driving force too has remained unchanged with sheep, particularly merino, and cattle farming taking centre stage.

While Calvinia is more the sort of place one goes to ponder life and admire the stars there are a couple of attractions. The Calvinia Museum for one, which showcases the lives of the early European settlers in the area, is interesting not only for its contents, but also for its home in a repurposed art-deco style synagogue.

Just north of town the Akkerendam Nature Reserve is an excellent place to view the carpet of Namaqualand flowers which burst into life each August, while 2 hiking trails within the reserve traverse the Hantam Mountains for those after a little more physical activity.
