Dinokeng South Unterkünfte
The Dinokeng region in the north western region of Gauteng is part of a tourism initiative by the Gauteng government to encourage economic development in the area. The name ‘Dinokeng’ was given to the area by the Batswana and Bapedi people who originally inhabited it. It means ‘Place of Rivers’ and is appropriate because Dinokeng lies in the catchment area of 2 rivers which feed the Olifants and Limpopo Rivers.
Dinokeng can be divided into two parts, north and south. While the Dinokeng North is known for having the only big 5 game reserve in the province, Dinokeng South is better known for its historical offering.
The mining town of Cullinan is situated on the Dinokeng South tourism route and it really brings history to life. Parts of the picturesque little town appear to have been frozen in time, with the original Edwardian architecture and pretty gardens intact. Oak Street in Cullinan is famous for being a so-called ‘living museum’. The area around the little town is renowned as a diamond-mining operation and the Cullinan Diamond, one of the largest rough diamonds ever found, was extracted there.
Dinokeng South, like Dinokeng North boasts an impressive dam and nature reserve. The Roodeplaat Dam and Nature Reserve is a favourite destination among water-sport enthusiasts, who flock there to water-ski, wake-board and paddle. The reserve, owing to its watery vegetation is a haven for a variety of bird species, which in turn, attract many passionate birders.
Dinokeng South has a lot to offer visitors and is within easy reach of both Johannesburg and Pretoria. What more could you ask for?
