Doonside Logement
Doonside is a coastal resort located roughly 30 kilometres south west of Durban in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. It sits on the banks of the Little Amanzimtoti River, between the towns of Illovo Beach and Amanzimtoti.
Doonside boasts a subtropical climate, making beach visits awesome all year round. The summer months of December to March are distinctly hot and humid, while in winter the air dries out a bit and cools, leaving you with a perfect temperature. The Indian Ocean helps matters by maintain a warm temperature throughout the year too.
Baggies Beach is one of Doonside’s most popular attractions, especially among the surfing community. Numerous surfing competitions are held there each year, and it is proud to be a favourite spot of Frankie Oberholzer, the international surfer.
The beach also has a tidal pool where all ages can don a snorkel and explore rock pool inhabitants. Slightly further out to sea, the annual sardine run is a sight to behold as sharks, dolphins and pelagic birds swarm around the sardines which move en masse up the coast.
Within walking distance of Doonside, just 2 kilometres away, is the Ilanda Wilds Nature Reserve, a lush riverine and coastal forest. This small reserve is home to more than 120 tree and bush species. Here, rare tree species like the Natal Elm and the Fluted Milkwood can be found as well as almost 300 bird species. There are also other animals like frogs, antelope and monkeys to be discovered.
Horse-riding is also a pleasant past time in the region and of course, no one will mind if you devote your days to reading and lazing on the beach either.
