Champagne Valley Verblyf

The Drakensberg is a 200 kilometre-long mountain range, renowned for being a World Heritage Site. Much of it is protected within the uKhahlamba Drakensberg National Park, which offers an extraordinary biodiversity and is a haven for numerous plant and animal species (including a wide variety of birds). It is also home to a wealth of San rock paintings, and naturally, epic hikes. Generally it is the Drakensberg’s peaks which are famous, but Champagne Valley (which admittedly is closely associated with Champagne Peak) is an exception.

You’ll find Champagne Valley in the Central Drakensberg, with Winterton being the gateway to the valley and also the main hub for amenities and tourism. The valley gets its name courtesy of the peak, one of the highest in the Drakensberg range. The story goes that the first climber to make the ascent of the peak took a bottle of bubbly with him to celebrate his anticipated achievement. However, when he summited, he took the champagne out of his pack and promptly dropped the bottle, causing it to smash, and champagne to trickle over the edge of the peak. The peak was known as Champagne Peak from then on out, and like all forces have an opposing force, so peaks have valleys, and that is how Champagne Valley became known as such.

Champagne Valley is easily accessible from Johannesburg and Durban via the N3 highway, which connects these two cities. You can reach the valley in less than 4 hours from either one. Once you arrive you’ll be impressed by the scenery and the array of activities, which range from river rafting and hot air ballooning to hiking and horse-riding. While there you should also try and catch a show by the Drakensberg Boys Choir, famous the world over.
