Estcourt Verblyf

The town of Estcourt is one rich in local history. A farming town, with many food processing plants on its outskirts too, its location is definitely one of the town’s major draw cards. It is situated in KwaZulu Natal on the outskirts of the beautiful Midlands area. It is very accessible too being located just off the N3 highway which connects Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Johannesburg.

The area in which Estcourt is found, was initially inhabited by the nomadic San people, after they had been driven out of other parts of KwaZulu Natal by the fierce Zulu warriors of the time. Many years later Estcourt, then named Bushman’s River, after the water source which flows nearby, became a British stronghold during the Anglo-Boer War. A testament to the town’s role in these battles is Fort Dunford, a construction widely credited to have been the most monumental British stronghold in the area and shielded the British from the Afrikaaners and the Zulu.

Today Fort Dunham houses the Estcourt Museum, which boasts artefacts showing off aspects of Zulu, Afrikaans and British culture – all groups which had a major role to play in the shaping of the region. It is a very interesting place indeed, especially since rumour has it that the ghosts of British soldiers still wonder the fort.

One of Estcourt’s other claims to fame is as a gateway town to the Giant’s Castle section of the Central Drakensberg. The mighty mountain lies just 40 kilometres away and its large presence can be felt strongly in town despite its distance. Close to Estcourt are numerous hiking and walking trails as well as various other Midlands activities like horse-riding, fishing and birding. There are also a number of San rock art sites nearby.
