Rosetta Verblyf
Rosetta is the type of village that if you happen to blink while passing on by, you’ll miss it entirely. Situated in the Natal Midlands, this quaint, seemingly nondescript town is the ideal holiday destination for individuals who need to get away from their daily life stresses.
If you’re looking for a fast-paced, frenetic holiday characterised by trips to the mall and fine dining, then perhaps Rosetta is not the right town for you. While the town has a small complex for convenience shopping, one visits the town not to shop, but to enjoy it for its rural, quiet surrounds. Locals enjoy Rosetta for its dramatic views of the imposing Drakensberg mountain range and it’s ‘far from the madding crowd’ country getaway feel.
With the absence of most distractions, those who visit become more attuned to the natural surroundings and the changing of the seasons. During summer and spring, the town is transformed into a wonderland of vibrancy and colour as wildflowers bloom in abundance. With the arrival of brisk autumn, the leaves on the trees turn from a voluminous green to burnt shades of orange, gold and yellow. Winter is characterised by a chill in the air, snow-capped mountains and if you’re lucky, snowfall on the ground.
Some of the most spectacular waterfalls of the KwaZulu Natal region can be found in Rosetta if you know where to look. The Kamberg Nature Reserve, which is found near the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park, comprises of walking trails that lead up to some magnificent waterfalls. Angling enthusiast can enjoy an afternoon of trout fishing at the park’s hatchery or at the dam which is fully stocked with rainbow trout. If you’re a fan of San rock art, the Kranses cave series are definitely worth a visit. While it is quite a trek to reach, approximately 12 kilometres, the hike rewards you with cave walls that are awash with paintings of eland and tribesmen holding shields.
Drive a little further afield in order to reach the Midlands Meanders, an arts and culture hub that was started up in 1985 by a small group of artists, potters and weavers. Since its humble beginnings, it has grown twofold, offering 160 venues in which to drink, eat, shop and peruse over local artworks.
