Faerie Glen Verblyf

Just hearing the name Faerie Glen conjures up images of small fantastical creatures flitting among toadstools and sprinkling fairy dust in their wake. The reality, while still pleasant, is somewhat different. Unfortunately for some, Faerie Glen is not a scene from an Enid Blyton story book, but rather an upmarket suburb of Pretoria, South Africa’s de facto capital.

Faerie Glen is located to the south east of Pretoria’s central business district, on the southern slopes of the Bronberg Mountains. This gives the suburb a beautiful backdrop and imbues it with a sense of tranquility, hard to come by in a frenetic place like Gauteng (the province in which you’ll find Pretoria and South Africa’s commercial centre, Johannesburg).

Faerie Glen is a well-established suburb neighbouring Lynwood and Garsfontein. Like them, it boasts wide streets, lined with leafy trees and well-tended gardens. It is a largely self-sufficient area with its own amenities like hospitals and shopping centres, and also has its fair share of recreational facilities.

Faerie Glen is a decidedly ‘outdoor suburb’, with many of its best attractions being most enjoyable when the sun is shining and the temperatures are warm. Among these attractions are the Faerie Glen Nature Reserve, managed by the City of Tshwane municipality, and the National Botanical Gardens.

Faerie Glen Nature Reserve is a favourite for walkers and nature lovers, with a variety of short, pleasant walks, an abundance of plant species to ogle and a host of small mammals and birds to spot. Here is a tea room too. The botanical gardens are just as pretty, also home to nearly 200 bird species, but have a less rugged air about them. Being a garden, as opposed to a protected area, most of the area is landscaped and the lawns are perfect for lazy summer picnics under the trees.

Faerie Glen is only 30 minutes from OR Tambo International Airport and major transport links such as the N1 and N4 highways can be accessed within 15 minutes.
