Halfway House Verblyf

Halfway House is an area in Gauteng, located to the north east of Johannesburg. At the beginning of the 19th century when Johannesburg and Pretoria were still being developed and many of the small towns surrounding them had not yet come into existence, the area between the two important cities constituted mainly vacant farmland.

These were also the days before modern technology so transportation was slow and the distance between the two big cities felt much larger than it does today. In order to ease the journey somewhat for travellers moving between Joburg and Pretoria, a settlement was developed around the half way mark and aptly named Halfway House. Those are the origins of the area but bear little resemblance to the Halfway House of today.

These days Halfway House is often considered a suburb of Midrand, itself an area within the greater Johannesburg municipality. Midrand is just one of the areas which form the grand conurbation between Johannesburg and Pretoria, rendering the two cities almost indistinct from one another.

Midrand’s claim to fame is as one of the fastest-growing industrial and commercial hubs in South Africa. The fact that Halfway House is situated on the doorstep of this area promises that it is the perfect place for business travellers to base themselves. Furthermore, Halfway House’s location on the N1 ensures that one can travel with ease between Johannesburg and Pretoria, as well as reach the area’s numerous attractions without too much effort.

Attractions near Halfway House include the Nizamiye Mosque, the largest Turkish-style mosque in South Africa and Gallagher Estate, one of Johannesburg’s largest conference and event venues. Kyalami, home to the motor racing track and the South African lipizzaners, is nearby too.
