Johannesburg is South Africa’s largest city and the hub of the country’s commercial, financial, industrial and mining activities. It is situated in the province of Gauteng in the interior of South Africa. Its position on the Highveld plateau affects its climate, bringing hot summer days, punctuated by afternoon thundershowers, and cool, sunny days with very cold nights in winter. Generally the climate is mild so staying in Johannesburg at any time of year will be a pleasant experience.
Gauteng, owing to its situation on the diamond and gold-rich belt of the Witwatersrand, is one of the wealthiest regions in Sub-Saharan Africa and much of this wealth is concentrated in Joburg. This explains the city’s vast expansion as more and more people flock to the urban area to take advantage of its booming economy. Given its focus on commercial and financial enterprises, it is not generally known as a popular tourist destination but being the location of OR Tambo, South Africa’s biggest international airport, it sees lots of tourists passing through and a lot has been done to make the place more appealing to tourists.
Many of the Johannesburg tourist attractions relate to South Africa’s Apartheid history. The Apartheid Museum is one such example. It is a relatively new museum and curated in such a way as to give visitors the sense that they are actually living in the Apartheid era, being assigned a race and receiving different treatment accordingly. The Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial in Soweto is also a significant historical sight which will no doubt enlighten its visitors.
Soweto, the large township in the south of Johannesburg, has become a tourist attraction in itself. Many companies offer tours of the township allowing visitors to glimpse what life looks like within the township’s boundaries. Not only will you get to meet some locals but share in a traditional meal too.
Some other notable suburbs of Joburg include Sandton, a wealthy business area and home to the Sandton Convention Centre and the Sandton Shopping Centre, pockets such as Melville, Parkhurst, Greenside and Rosebank, renowned for their boho atmosphere, sidewalk cafes and bars, and the wealthy northern suburbs such as Bryanston, Houghton and Sandhurst.
Attractions close to Johannesburg include the Cradle of Human Kind at Sterkfontein, Sun City entertainment resort outside Rustenburg and many game reserves within a few hours’ drive of the city.
