Middelburg is a medium-sized town in Mpumalanga, South Africa. It was established by immigrants as a large, industrial area. It maintains this identity to this day, although its tourism sector is growing, especially since it lies on one of the main routes to the Kruger National Park. Middelburg is great for a stop-over en route and it also has an appeal to business people visiting the town for work-related reasons.
When Middelburg was first established, it was largely populated by British and European immigrants. This was because the backbone of the town was the steel industry, which in turn fed other industries such as coal manufacturers and transportation. Post World War II, when the European economies were depressed, there was an influx of migrants to the town who saw opportunities for putting their industrial skills to work. Today there are two notable companies in operation, Columbus Steel and Thos Begbie. Furthermore, there are also a number of agricultural endeavours as well as the budding tourism industry.
Apart from the Kruger National Park nearby, there is the Loskop Dam Nature Reserve and the Botshabelo Nature Reserve, the latter provides views over the Botshabelo Mission Station. You can also pop into the Botshabelo Mission Station Museum and if you’re looking to learn about the local culture take a tour of the Ndebele Tourist Village.The centre of the town is marked by the Dutch Reformed Church, which provides an insight into the town’s early days. If nature is more up your alleyway, there are a number of pleasant hiking trails just outside of town. Alternatively, you could visit the Middelburg Dam.
The Middelburg Country Club welcomes visitors and offers a tennis court, golf course and swimming pools as well as a bar and restaurant. There are also numerous bars and restaurants in the town which are frequented by locals.
Middelburg is also rich in terms of accommodation, take your pick of hotels, self-catering establishments or guest-houses to make your business trip or Kruger Park holiday comfortable.
