North West Verblyf - 13
North West is a province of South Africa found to the east of Gauteng and which shares a border with Botswana. The province is a mining epicentre but also boasts some more eye-pleasing attractions such as Big Five game reserves. It is in and around these reserves where North West accommodation is most popular.
Generally North West is a flat section of South Africa with scattered trees and grassland. It is a summer rainfall area although the annual rainfall is only about 360ml.Summer temperatures range from 17°C - 31°C while in winter the minimum is 3°C and the maximum is 21°C. The materials which are mined in the province include platinum, gold, uranium and diamonds.
While at a glance North West may not seem like a particularly interesting place, it has a surprising amount to offer the visitor. In the North East of the province, the Magaliesberg Mountain Range extends from Pretoria (in Gauteng) to Rustenburg. The Magaliesberg is not only beautiful to admire, but the many peaks and slopes offer numerous activities for the outdoor enthusiast from mountain biking to hiking.
The small city of Rustenburg is the closest settlement to the well-known Sun City Casino complex, which also comprises the novel Lost City hotel and Valley of the Waves water complex. Just down the road from Sun City (and Rustenburg) you’ll find one of the gems of the North West province – the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. This is a beautiful wilderness area boasting the Big 5 in its list of 66 large mammals. It is unique in that the whole nature reserve is set in a volcanic crater.
Another unique reserve in North West is the Madikwe Game Reserve. Madikwe, also a Big 5 reserve is tucked into a corner in the far North of the province, bordering Botswana. It is the only reserve in South Africa proclaimed solely for being the most appropriate and sustainable use of the land.
Other attractions making North West accommodation desirable include the Hartebeespoort Dam, a haven for water sport enthusiasts, and the Vredefort Dome, an ancient UNESCO World Heritage site where a giant meteor struck earth.
Mafikeng is the capital of the province, but Potchefstroom is also significant by North West standards for being home a large campus of North West University, and also for hosting the annual Aardklop Arts Festival.

Great place, it was our wedding anniversary, so we went rock climbing (Own gear) at the Nuclear Crag on Africaland property, next to Necsa and enjoyed some white water rafting in the afternoon on the Crocodile River with Paddle Power. They also own a cute little restaurant with delicious food where you get off out of the raft, the Rusty Feather. Loads of little shops and found a Wonderful Portuguese restaurant right on the water at the boat club, next to the zoo, which I'll highly recommend. CHEAP Honey, in the town, driving away from the tunnel, after the Portuguese restaurant. It's solidly worth the stop, it's run by a pharmacist and her hubby.

Hartbeespoort is a lovely place to visit to get away from home. There's lot to do and see. Also, they have a lot of restaurants and shops to visit. The best thing is that its not far to travel and you in the bush and away from the concrete jungle.
