Shelly Beach Verblyf

Shelly Beach is one in a string of coastal towns dotted along KwaZulu Natal’s Hibiscus Coast, also known as the South Coast. This is a popular stretch of beach, especially for local holiday makers from Durban, Johannesburg and other inland destinations. Something about the lush green vegetation, the golden sands and the warm blue ocean draws visitors from afar and hooks them, guaranteeing their repeated return.

Shelly Beach’s name is embarrassingly obvious. For some reason, this section of the coast is particularly plentiful when it comes to sea shells. The delicate one-time homes of little crabs, muscles and other small sea life are scattered across the sand giving beach strollers something colourful to look at (they come in shades of pink, blue, silver and many hues in between) as well as a low-cost souvenir.

The Indian Ocean, which meets the KwaZulu Natal coastline, is warmed by the Mozambican current. Its warmer temperature provides just the right kind of conditions for certain habitats to develop and in turn, this attracts an array of interesting underwater sea life, providing memorable dive experiences off the coast of many towns along this coast. The situation at Shelly Beach is no different and there are a number of spots (with more creative names than the town) such as Potato Reef, Deep Salmon and Bo Boyi Reef, where divers can experience the sight of beautiful coral forests and colourful fish.

The warm subtropical climate is responsible for the thick, jungle like greenery surrounding the town and combined with the warm sea, makes Shelly Beach another great spot in KwaZulu Natal for sun-worshipers to gather. Other land-based activities include rock and surf fishing and regular deep-sea angling competitions are held throughout the year.

Shelly Bay is said to be one of the fastest developing residential and commercial towns on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast, but it’s so lovely that even this is unlikely to deter the masses!
