Ramsgate Verblyf

Ramsgate is the epitome of a seaside beach town. It is located on the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal, on a section known as the Hibiscus Coast. It is easily reachable from Durban, and lies just 4 kilometres south of Margate. It is also very near the Eastern Cape border.

The town has a permanent population of just 1500, largely constituted by artists and other creative folk. Like many towns along the South Coast though, the population swells in peak season as mainly local tourists from far and wide descend upon the golden beaches to enjoy the warm Indian Ocean. Ramsgate Beach is especially pleasant given its Blue Flag status – an accolade only bestowed on beaches meeting a particularly high standard of safety and cleanliness, and which have management plans set up to protect the surrounding environment.

The environment which surrounds Ramsgate is defined by a combination of indigenous coastal and riverine forest and lush plantations of coffee, bananas and KwaZulu Natal’s signature sugar cane. These crops are all supported by the subtropical climate – hot humid summers and warm, dry winters. Apart from crop cultivation, this climate supports a year-round tourism industry which peaks over national, religious and school holidays.

Activities in Ramsgate are reminiscent of those all along the South Coast. There is the 6 kilometre Ramsgate Marine Ramble which hugs the coast, allowing you to dip into the tidal pool, explore the rock pools and keep an eye open for whales and dolphins along the way.

Just off shore are numerous scuba diving sites, including the shipwrecks at Aliwal Shoal. This coast is particularly exciting to dive if you are shark fan, as you stand the chance of spotting hammerheads, zambezis, ragged tooths and great whites. The beach is manned by life guards and shark nets are in place so swimmers needn’t worry.

Other water sports to enjoy include surfing, kayaking and snorkelling, and for the less hands-on, whale watching and shark viewing boat trips.

The breath-taking Oribi Gorge and all the adventure activities it offers is a short drive away and bird watching is rewarding in the Ramsgate region too.
