Southport Verblyf
KwaZulu Natal’s South Coast (also known as the Hibiscus Coast) is awash with small idyllic beach towns. Southport is one such town and like the others, it is blessed with a great climate, warm ocean and a golden stretch of beach. Its main selling point though is its relatively quiet nature compared to the other resorts.
Southport is situated between Port Shepstone and Sea Park, and is easily accessible from Durban via the N2. It is less than 120 kilometres from the city, and only 8 kilometres from Port Shepstone, and yet this old railway siding town remains quiet and relatively unpopulated. The upshot of this is that even in the height of summer, Southport’s beach remains secluded, and there is far less competition for the shady spots than there would be on another beach. It is a great family beach destination for this reason.
The subtropical climate which ensures hot humid summers and warm, dry winters is a universal plus when it comes to South Coast towns, as is the warm Indian Ocean which laps at the shore. While the beach conditions are never far off perfect in Southport, there are many options if you feel like a break from the sea and sand.
Two minutes down the road, Port Shepstone provides all the amenities you could wish for, from shopping and entertainment resorts to restaurants. Furthermore, just inland you’ll find the impressive Oribi Gorge, as well as numerous small nature reserves with hiking and walking trails as well as great bird watching opportunities. There are of course many snorkelling opportunities on Southport’s doorstep too, and if you are craving a relaxed beach holiday with the option of heading into a vibe-y crowded beach town nearby, Southport just might be the ideal destination for you.
