Despite having a name that instils war-like imagery in the minds of visitors, life in Trafalgar is tranquil and slow-paced. Located on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal, this small, coastal town offers to the locals, a peaceful existence.
Trafalgar’s association with war are obscure at best, descending from a time when a group of missionaries arrived on our shores in the early 1800’s. Having built a homestead on a small strip of land, the area was named after a battle that had been fought on far off lands.
Holidaymakers from surrounding areas enjoy quiet weekends away in Trafalgar. One of the main attractions, of course, is the beach. Visitors can enjoy exploring every nook and cranny of the rock pools, or simply relax on the sand while reading a good book.
The tides and warmer waters are ideal for surfing, where surfers enjoy riding the waves on warm, sunny afternoons. Despite its small size, the beach is shark-protected, meaning that swimmers can wade into deeper waters without fear of getting attacked. During the season and on weekends, the beach is patrolled by a team of lifeguards. While the December holidays sees an influx of tourists making their way to the beach, the bay at Trafalgar is seldom overcrowded. Snorkelling is also a popular past time due to the existence of 90-million-year-old fossils that are found buried just a short distance from the shoreline.
Just like many other seaside towns, there has been very little development in the area, something in which the locals view as a blessing. The beaches have been left virtually untouched, and the town has a single shop and a quaint, seafront café. Take a short walk to San Lameer and you’ll find one of the locals favourite hang outs, The Lagoon Bar and Grill. The eatery offers quality food, refreshments, and picturesque views overlooking the lagoon
