Upington Verblyf - 2

The town of Upington is situated in the beautiful, but largely under-appreciated Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It lies firmly inland, in the region just south of the Kalahari, known as the Green Kalahari. Surrounded by an arid landscape, Upington itself and its immediate surroundings are green, thanks to its position on the banks of the Orange River. This greenery lends the town a pretty feel and is responsible for much of the agriculture and tourism that the town survives on.

Upington was established in 1848 as a mission station, and later named after Sir Thomas Upington, the Attorney General (and later Prime Minister) of the Cape. The town’s development was greatly speeded up by the use of donkeys, a fact which led to the construction of a donkey statue in the town as a tribute to the humble beasts. The mission station which started it all now houses a museum known as the Kalahari-Oranje Museum, which boasts artifacts relating to the development of Upington and the Lower Orange River.

The Orange River ensures fertile soil which supports agriculture in the area, but it also provides many activities for locals and visitors alike. For example, sundowner cruises on the river are a must – just imagine floating down stream at dusk, bubbly in hand, watching the barbell jump. Water sports and fishing are also popular past times.

Close to Upington, the Bazalel Wine and Brandy Estate provides cellar tours and tastings, and the brandy and witblitz on offer is particularly well acclaimed. Four kilometres outside of Upington, the Tierberg Nature Reserve has plenty of springbok, and in winter the aloes come into bloom. If you really want a flower spectacle though, visit in spring when the succulents flower.

If you’re prepared to travel a little further, the Augrabies Falls National Park is a highly recommended attraction.
