The Belfast Golf Club, unlike its namesake, is a small club in the South African province of Mpumalanga. It is
situated on the outskirts of a small town, Belfast, named after the Irish city. Apart from its name though, the only thing the South African Belfast
really has in common with the Irish one is that it can get incredibly cold
there.
The Belfast Golf Club has all the golfing
amenities one could ask for. At its heart of course though, is the 9-hole golf
course, which was built in 1963. Situated 210 kilometres to the east of
Pretoria along the N4, just outside Middelburg, Belfast is considered one of
the coldest places in South Africa. Luckily, when it gets too cold and
unpleasant to be out on the course, there is a cosy clubhouse to retire to.
The clubhouse in question is home to a bar
and halfway house, and given the club’s rural setting near the Drakensberg
escarpment, a beautiful view too. There is plenty more on offer as well,
like the driving range and pro-shop, which offers rental carts and other
equipment.
Visitors to the Belfast Golf Club are more
than welcome on any day of the week, provided they are dressed in traditional
golfing attire. In addition to golfing and hanging out in the bar, visitors to
the area may also be interested in fly-fishing, an activity for which the area
is known – there is a trout dam on the boundary of the club in fact.
There are also numerous cultural
attractions within easy reach of the Belfast Golf Club. It is close enough that when your golfing
holiday is up, you can jump back in your car and arrive back in Pretoria or
Johannesburg within 2 hours.
