The Bellville Velodrome is a multi-purpose sporting arena in Cape Town, which has also been used as a venue for music concerts, conferences and exhibitions. It is located in Bellville, which makes up part of the Northern Suburbs of the city. Bellville is a largely Afrikaans-speaking suburb about 25 kilometres from Cape Town’s central business district. It can be reached by following the N1 road out of the city centre.
The velodrome was constructed with a phased development in mind and was originally built as part of South Africa’s Olympic bid. The velodrome was designed specifically for sporting events and music concerts, and the whole arena is designed with a soffit lining to provide the best possible acoustics. It also has a 250 metre cement cycle track along its perimeter.
Over the years the velodrome has seen impressive music acts such as Mary J Blige, Billy Joel, Rodriguez and the Counting Crows. However, its prowess as Cape Town’s number one music concert venue has been overshadowed by the Cape Town Stadium in Green Point, built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament.
Other events hosted at the Bellville Velodrome have included the World Cycling Federation Championships, WWE’s (wrestling) RAW SummerSlam Tour and the Organised Chaos LAN Party.
The Bellville Velodrome may not be as glamorous as the new Cape Town Stadium, but it still hosts numerous events and is a well-organised venue. There is ample parking, and bar and restaurant facilities inside. The velodrome however is a non-smoking area and the general rule is that no camera equipment is permitted inside the venue.
