Bluff Verblyf - 2

The Bluff refers to a long, rounded ridge of sand dunes on the southern side of Durban in KwaZulu Natal. The Zulus named it isiBubulungu, a reference to its shape. The Bluff comprises about 7 of Durban’s suburbs, including Brighton beach, Durban’s ‘friendly suburb’. Bluff accommodation is convenient as it lies between the city’s central business district and the King Shaka International Airport and the industrial suburbs which lie further south.

The Bluff is a great location for holiday-makers for a number of reasons. Firstly it is home to two of Durban’s iconic beaches – Anstey’s and Brighton Beach. Both are patrolled by lifeguards and protected by shark nets. They are also both family orientated with fresh water paddling pools, and tidal pools to keep smaller kids and the less confident adults occupied.

The sea is warm thanks to the Indian Ocean with the warm Mozambican current and both beaches have swimming areas and great surf spots. Brighton Beach is particularly renowned amongst surfers for the ‘Cave Rock’ surf spot.

The Bluff, as you might imagine, is a prominent geographical feature in Durban and there is speculation that it once may have been an important navigational indicator to ships heading into Durban. Today the Bluff makes up the southern quayside of the Durban port, protecting it from the open waters of the Indian Ocean.

Apart from lazing around on the beaches in Durban’s warm, subtropical temperatures, Bluff accommodation is also close to the Bluff National Park Golf Club, a challenging course which also appeals to keen birders. Large part of the Bluff are protected wetlands and play host to a variety of waders and other water birds. Other natural stars are the whales which can be seen in the winter months, and the famous dolphins which frequent the shoreline throughout the year.

Other potential activities include taking a tour of the old whaling station, investigating the city centre and heart of Durban culture or visiting the Bluff shopping mall.
